Social Media Marketing Risks that You should be Aware of

| Thursday, December 06, 2012 | |

Social media is a powerful tool to promote your business. Even small business owners are on social sites to market their products and to get in touch with their customers. Opening an account with a social networking site and updating your business status and making announcements about offers and business improvements seem to be so simple that every employee wants to do the task. However, it is not as simple as it seems. Going social is like opening Pandora’s Box; you don’t know what will come out of it. However, it can’t always bring favorable results. However, if you are careful, you can avoid many problems. What are the risks associated with social media marketing?

Poor or no strategy:

Often, companies do not have a strong strategy when they go social. Planning is something crucial and any small defect in it will lead to serious consequences and you can’t come out of it before doing enough harm to your business which will be reflected on it for quite some time. There are some organizations that don’t even form a strategy. Therefore, careful planning is what needs to be done before using social media as your marketing tool.

Leaning on tools:

There are some good social media tools that will help you reach out to your customers. These tools need to be used in order to get to your customers and promote your business. But many businesses go wrong by leaning too much on these tools. It has to be remembered that these are just tools; so, they can’t act with logical thinking. You will have to do your bit of work in order to promote your business in a healthy way. However, the power of these tools can’t be underestimated because they help a lot.

Lack of measuring tools:

Like all other promotional activities, the effectiveness of social media marketing should also be measured. You can find many tools scattered across the Internet claiming to help you measure the effectiveness of your social media activities. But not all of them help. You need to find the right tool for your business based on the scale of activity and other factors in order to measure the result properly. A particular tool which helps a business may not be effective for another business. Therefore, research on the different tools available and decide on one tool which will help you best.

Lack of attention

Another risk is the lack of knowledge of what is going on in the field. All of your competitors are there on the Internet trying to grab the opportunity to get some of your customers. Therefore, you have to be on the lookout for any such activity and take appropriate measures. Look around the Web and observe what your competitors are doing to promote their businesses and redesign your strategies to match the competition. Just mimicking their strategy won’t help at all. Make different strategies so that your customers stay with you and new customers join you.

These are some of the risks associated with social media marketing. Taking appropriate measures at the right time will help you reduce these risks and evade all the bitter results.
