Facebook has a new message interface

| Wednesday, October 31, 2012 | | Be first to comment!

Facebook is ever changing in terms of the user interface. Every attempt is made to make Facebook a better social platform. Recently Facebook upgraded it's messaging interface.

The above image says it all but still.

Now, I must tell you the best part of this interface. Just like your updated chat interface, message interface now provides a search bar. You can search any contact by name or email address and start conversation or leave a message if the other person is not online at that moment. But that's not all. The new search bar is powerful enough to search a word from all of your messages. So, you asked the new contact number of your friend and didn't saved it into your phone. After some days you may get busy searching messages and scrolling the conversation to get the number. But now, you just need to type "contact" or "number" and the all of your messages having the above word(s) will be searched and displayed onto your screen. Isn't that great?
Now, Facebook allows you to put multiple images in messages that too all together. Just click the 'add photos' link and from the window that will pop up you can select multiple images from your photo collection already on Facebook or upload multiple images from your system.

What to Expect from Google's October 29th Event

| Saturday, October 27, 2012 | | Be first to comment!

What is going to be new at Google’s October 29th Event is a question that not many can answer now. Rumor mills say it is all about a mobile phone. The most likely candidate to be associated with the event it seems is LG and the Nexus it is reliable come to understood. Whatever the outcome, Google has already sent out invitation to the proposed event in New York, and if everything goes well, you can expect to see another few devices will be included to the already burgeoning choice before users. Come the D-day and everything will be clear as crystal, but why wait until then?

Most insiders agree that the meet is planned for the release of Google’s Nexus Phone to be made by LG. Neither is the possibility of other manufacturers jumping into the fray with Google is ruled out for the device. In all probability the phone is a likely variant of the tried LG Optimus G that saw a launch in recent times. The new model, Nexus 7 will have 32 GB memory it is learnt. It is also going to be a quantum jump in terms of technology over the its earlier variant with a smaller memory. If that turns out to be true then the price of 16 GB Nexus is sure to drop drastically, insiders on the sly report. The other rumors pertain to technical details. The LG Nexus 4 will reportedly have 1280 x 768 HD-true IPS screen. The other features are: quad-core snapdragon s4 processor, open screen for navigation without any micro slot. There may not be much changes to the non-removable battery. It is however expected to have a longer staying life, some in the know of things indicate. What remains to be seen is how the wireless charging system is going to do its job.

Although not strictly a product, the Google event is also likely to see the emergence of Android Lime Pie, the newest Android version after its announcement at the event. This is significant when considered along with the news that a website calling itself Android Authority reporting that the new Android’s latest version has popped in Google Analytics. And, that it was coming from devices Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy is significant buttressing the widely circulated rumors.

It is very much apparent that another likely candidate for announcement is Google Nexus 7 Tablet, and that seemingly has come from Think Digit. In all likelihood, this 7 inch device is expected to be priced sub-hundred dollar. Until the official word comes out, the rumor mills are likely to stay afloat keeping prospective buyers and users guessing what is in store. Some indication also show that products named Nexus 7 tablets have been shipped for sales on the opening day of the Google’s Event day. Until the final day on October 29 everything is just going to be guess and what is the truth will only unfurl on 29-Oct.

How to Create a Magazine Style WordPress Site

| Wednesday, October 24, 2012 | | 2 Comments so far

WordPress is counted as one of the best full blown Content Management System (CMS). WordPress is used for more than just blogging. A majority of WordPress site designers are moving away from the traditional creation platform and are making use of magazine-style themes. The characteristic features of the magazine-style themes separate them from the traditional layout.

This kind of theme allows website creators to portray in the front page of the site, a glimpse of the various contents of the website with their headline. Thus, allowing users to directly visit the content that they wish to read. The website designer is allowed to place content in the order of importance on the website that makes use of magazine-style theme.

Adopting the magazine-style theme for WordPress site

Depending on the kind of website that you create, you must carefully choose a theme. One of the reasons why this theme is being widely used is because it makes a serious attempt to break free from the routine way of creating websites. With this theme, you can enhance the look of your website. It allows users to handle huge amounts of content on a single page making it look more appealing and disciplined.

Advantages of using magazine-style theme for WordPress site

A magazine-style theme has many advantages. It is because of the advantages this theme is being widely used. A few of the advantages have been discussed

Highly recommended for huge sites

When you have a huge website to create and a mammoth volume of content to fit into your website, the magazine-style theme is highly recommended. While using this theme, you can update content on your website on a regular basis, with great ease. There are no chances that your content or posts gets lost or reshuffled while using this theme.

Huge volume of content can be featured on the front page

A majority of templates feature the latest posts on the front page. The older posts become lost and buried within other website pages. While using the magazine-style theme, you are allowed to display and highlight content you think is important on the first page of your website. You can put up a small teaser about the paramount content on the first page, thus guiding readers to the location of it.

Provision for enhanced navigation

A magazine-style theme can either make the webpage look professional or it can confuse the reader. This theme is used when there is huge volume of content to be displayed. The content can either be categorically arranged on the webpage or just left in a clutter. When the content is neatly placed on the webpage, it provides enhanced navigation.
Magazine-style theme has many other advantages as well.

Creation of a magazine-style WordPress site using a plugin

Creating a magazine-style WordPress site is not that difficult a task. The popular methods have been discussed.

Types and Views is a popular WordPress plugin that allows you to create a website without coding. Using Types and Views, you can create an amazing magazine-style WordPress site in 4 simple steps.
The creation of WordPress magazine-style page is no magic. It is about placing the right content in the right place. To achieve this, you can make use of two loops. One is the external loop and the other is the internal loop. Use the external loop to place the various categories and use the internal loop to place content under each category.

Step by step process in the creation magazine-style WordPress site

It is better to follow a bottom-up approach by starting from the creation of the smallest blocks and moving on to creating the bigger ones. The four step approach can be followed in creating a magazine-style WordPress site.

With View Templates create Post Teasers

The first step is the creation of teasers for your templates. Go to ‘Views’ and select ‘New View Template’. You are left with a thumbnail where you can add a title, a few lines of content and an Image. You can select ‘Raw Output’ to make sure that WordPress does not add line breaks and paragraphs. Once you have completed the inputs you can click on ‘Save’.

Create a category column for teasers

Now that you have created the teasers for various important posts, it becomes necessary that you put them in a column. Go to ‘View’ then select ‘Add New View’. Use the ‘Filter’ option, select ‘Posts’. In the ‘Order by section select ‘Post date’ and then select ‘Descending’. Then click on ‘Ok’.

Make the outer view for the category

This option must be used when you have many categories to display. This view will hold the various categories together. You will have to use the ‘Filter’ and ‘Settings’ to achieve this. Make use of ‘Add another filter term’, select or deselect the categories that you wish to have. Choose the layout style and select the number of columns and click on ‘Save View’.

Insert Category View to the homepage

Now that you have successfully created the teasers and the column for the teasers, you have to make it visible on the website. You will have to display the outer loop in your homepage. Go to ‘Settings’ and select ‘Reading’. Once you have edited the page, you can click on ‘Categories View’.

Google Nexus 7. Low cost powerful tablet

| Wednesday, October 24, 2012 | | Be first to comment!

The Google Nexus 7 comes with killer specs, at a really low price, therefore it seems like it will conquer the market shortly.
As well as other Nexus devices, the Google Nexus 7 provides the pure Android experience, without any UIs or other customizations.
Regarding the hardware, I must say that the Google Nexus 7 is powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset, with a quad-core 1.3GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 1GB of RAM and ULP GeForce GPU. You can find the full spec sheet and all the features on the manufacturer’s website.
Although it’s really powerful and cheap, this tablet has also some flaws:
  • Non expandable memory
  • No rear camera, front camera only
  • The screen has poor sunlight legibility
Still, considering this price, we can surely live with those downsides. Let’s see what we can come up with regarding the design. The front is dominated by the 7 inches IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen of WXGA resolution (1280 x 800 pixels) which is also scratch-resistant thanks to Corning glass.
Above the display we find the 1.2 MP camera which is really decent and does its job. Right next to the camera we find the ambient light sensor, which automatically adjusts the screen brightness. On the right side we find the power/lock key and the volume rocker a bit lower. The left side features pogo pins for dock connectivity and a microphone pinhole. On the bottom we find the 3.5 mm audio jack, as well as the microUSB port, which can be used both for charging and data transfer. The only notable thing on top is the secondary microphone.  On the back we find the loudspeaker grill, which isn’t so impressive.
The Google Nexus 7 is the first tablet which comes with Android 4.1 Jellybean, which runs flawless. In benchmarks, this tablet does really good, but falling way behind the Samsung Note 10.1.
The Nexus 7 has only a front facing camera, and besides, it doesn’t even have a camera app, therefore you must use anything else for taking photos, this camera is especially designed for video calls. The overall quality is decent; the Nexus 7 manages to handle video calls really great, the quality being restricted mostly by the network bandwidth, rather than the camera.
The Google Nexus 7 is powered by a standard 4325 mAh battery, which is more than decent, being capable of keeping the tablet powered on for more than 9 hours.

Conclusion

The Google Nexus 7 is an awesome piece of technology; thanks to its killer specs and price, this tablet will become a best seller in no time, out passing other powerful rivals on the market.

Custom 404 page URL in blogger

| Monday, October 22, 2012 | | Be first to comment!

As you all might be knowing that Blogger now allows you to have a custom 404 error page. This error page is displayed when somebody tries to access a link of your website that never existed or has been removed. But where is that custom 404 error page is stored, I am here talking about the direct URL that will lead you to the 404 error page.
Some users also try to access this by putting the wrong link. Well even that is a way. To access 404 error page, the URL is yourdomain.com/404.html. So you need to add /404.html. Alternatively you can put, any thing like /a, /b etc.

If you want to create a custom 404 Page, then refer to How to set custom Page Not Found or error 404. This is very useful if you are a web designer. You can show Custom 404 error page in the links just like WordPress templates have. This can be used while showcasing your work. Using /404.html may also end the viewer in surprise. He/she will possibly discover one more available designer possibility of having a custom 404 error page.

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

| Sunday, October 21, 2012 | | 5 Comments so far

Due to some error, "Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE"  gets displayed on the archive or home page.
Now, I don't exactly know what happens which causes this error. But this generally happens when you copy and paste an article from a word file. I accept guest posts. I received them via email, and I access emails via MS Outlook. Two guest posts that were approved and ready to be published, got this error after they were published. This is possibly happening due to the xml that is copied. Modern applications store and transfer their data using xml.

This error is due to the html that is copied while copying the content from the received word file. Click here to see the error mentioned.

If you have encountered such error, then try opening the article and right click on the page anywhere except the links and images. Then click View Page Source from the right click menu. This will open the html of the web page. Now scroll down or use ctrl+f to find-
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
All of this red and green coding is what causes this error. Red and green is displayed in Firefox, only green in Chrome and black in IE as it opens the code in Notepad.

How to correct this?

  1. Goto Blogger and open the post with this error.
  2. Click on HTML tab to access html of the post.
  3. Use ctrl+f to find  <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
  4. Select from <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> to </style><![endif]--> and delete it then update the post.
You are done. Now there is no error and you have your good looking home page.

Understanding Hosting services

| Saturday, October 20, 2012 | | Be first to comment!

What is hosting?

In terms of networking, hosting means making your website public by putting it on a web server.

There are four types of hosting-

Free Hosting

As the name says, this type of web hosting don't asks you to pay anything. But with that comes a number of limitations too. It don't allows you to have a domain name, limited or no technical support, limited security options. Generally ISPs who provide free hosting, store your website in a directory or give sub domains. Sites stored in directory of the domain has address like www.xyz.com/sites/YourSiteName. If they'll provide sub domains then address will be like YourSiteName.xyz.com, web portals like WordPress and Blogger host blogs on sub domains. Still it is top ranked option for personal or hobby website. In case of Blogger, you are hosting your blog on Google's powerful servers.

Shared/Virtual Hosting

This is the most commonly used option. Cheapest in paid options. In shared or virtual hosting, your website is placed on an independent web server but the resources are shared with hundreds and thousands of other users who have their website up & running, and because of shared resources the cost is also shared that is why you don't have to pay low amount. You get your own domain and custom email addresses but restrictions are implemented on databases, traffic volume and applications.. You can also put minor server side application(s). Shared or virtual hosting are same though some web hosting providers classify as different , in such cases they are just two different plans.

Dedicated Hosting

Shared hosting is good for bloggers, web designers and small businesses. But what if you have large business or a high traffic website or you have to run some major server based applications. Under such conditions you must go for dedicated hosting. There is no sharing of resources in dedicated hosting. No sharing of resources means it is costly. Rates vary from company to company and plan to plan.

There is almost no restriction. But some restrictions may be implemented based on the package offered by the web host. They have a number of different types of plans so that they can market better.

Collocated Hosting

This is the most cost effective way. In this, hosting is done on your own web server but your web server is located with your ISPs. There are no restrictions.

Hands on with LG Escape

| Thursday, October 18, 2012 | | Be first to comment!

While the Pantech Flex – AT&T’s admirable offering has enticed us enough, it’s now LG’s turn to show off – the LG Escape. LG Escape with an affordable price tag features a powerful processor, a bright and attractive display, blazing fast LTE data speeds, and a thin design.  It’s utterly impossible to escape from the vibrancy of LG Escape’s display. When it comes to the design of LG Escape, the device traverses the usual beaten path, rather than stepping outside the box. With its all-plastic (shiny black plastic) casing, the Escape weighs just 4.5 ounces and feels a bit hollow. However, the look of the Escape reminds us of a larger version of the LG Lucid. The LG Escape measures 4.96 by 2.54 by 0.37 inches and looks like a quality device, except for the false note (the textured matte plastic band looks a bit tacky). Apart from this, the Escape is an attractive device that is light and comfortable to hold.

Design and Display:

There’s half an inch of bezel on either side of the LCD display that makes the device more beautiful. Like the most Android devices, the Escape sports three well spaced-capacitive buttons below its display while the earpiece, a front facing 1.3-megapixelcamera and a proximity sensor are above the screen.  In the rear of the Escape, there’s a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording video in 1080p. The device packs a sizable 4.3 inch 540 x 960 IPS LCD screen that is pretty decent when considering the price. But, if you dig deeper, the washed out appearance, weak brightness output and poor viewing angles may be disappointing to you. In other words, although the Escape lacks the wow factor, the device still stands out of the crowd for its functionality.

Interface and Internet Connectivity:

Talking about the functionality, the Escape that runs on LTE networks, features 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It’s never a surprise that the Escape’s core organizer apps aren’t deviating from the LG’s functionality. With a strong reception, the device has pulled in some incredibly fast data speeds like upstream speeds over 12 Mbps and downstream speeds over 18 Mbps. It’s not just this, the Escape features LG’s latest Optimus User-Interface running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. While navigating the home screen, the cool 3D transition effects splash a bit of interface’s character making it more attractive. The Escape offers you the usual Android device’s functionality. The other noteworthy feature – LG’s Quick Memo is on board with the Escape that lets you take screen shots of what is being done. You can also doodle on these screenshots and share it with your friends and family. When it comes to emailing features, you can never complain about the Escape’s rich set of features, as the device gives a wonderful web browsing experience.

Processor and Performance:

The dual-core 1.2 GHz processor of the Escape is no slouch. While it's true that the device's processor isn't as scorching as the Samsung Galaxy S III's dual-core 1.5GHz S4 processor, the Escape's processor is fast enough to run all the games and apps. Like the most Android phones, the Escape has no word on any update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which is slightly disappointing. The impressive dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM ensures a consistent performance as it ample enough to handle almost all the operations effortlessly. When it comes to battery, the Escape features a beefy 2,150 mAh battery that delivers a better battery life close to 6 hours and 27 minutes.

Verdict:

While the expectations regarding entry-level smartphones have increased with the impressive Pantech Flex recently, The LG Escape competes well with its performance making it difficult to choose. The Escape offers you tons of value at the most economical prices, making it the perfect choice for you and me.

Hidden image in every Android device

| Sunday, October 14, 2012 | | 1 Comment so far

Ever spotted this image. It is there in your Android device and is not easy to reach. One of my friend always has his Android device in his hand. I took it from him and opened up this image and challenged him. He was not at all able to find it.

I was going through some menu when I unknowingly spotted this image. I was inside setting menu and I was bored so I started tapping screen very fast and suddenly this image opened up. So here are the steps to open this image.

  1. Open menu, then goto Settings.
  2. Goto About Phone. In this menu you will find Android Version.
  3. Triple tap Android Version, it will open the hidden image.

I believe that different version of Android will display different images. I tried this on a number of Android devices but all were running on Android 2.3.6 and thus I got same image. If you have another version of Android OS, then you will encounter a different image.Jelly Bean or Android 4.1 will show you an image of jelly bean. And so on...

The above image is by Jack Larson.

Kick start you blog Search engine rankings

| Thursday, October 11, 2012 | | Be first to comment!

Every new blog post requires a good start. If the article has quality content and is on a well reputed blog it automatically draws the attention of the readers as well as other visitors. The websites ranks are measured using a number of factors like visitor count, links in other reputed websites, etc.

What will this quality give you when it was unable to get a decent traffic for itself?

Good quality content is common in reputed websites. But this does not means it is not present in lower scale or just started weblogs. But the thing is it get buried because of low attention.

Social Networking

There are a number of social networking site live and active on net, like StumbleUpon, Digg, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, etc. A number of readers and bloggers are busy posting updates with good frequency on these sites. These sites provide you with a perfect kick start, by providing descent traffic. But maximum of this traffic can be categorized under unwanted. The unwanted traffic serves an additional count in your traffic stats, but not really reads or gets engaged with the content or website in any possible way. But still serves a perfect starter. These starts give the blog posts a better page ranking and then it starts getting organic search. The rate of this organic search rises with direct proportionality to the passing time depending upon the type of content.

Again the fact is simple, it just needs a thought. The traffic that gets to you comprises of the users that were not actually searching the web for exactly, the matter that they get too. If you feel you have some quality content posted on your blogger, you must be happy about it doesn't matter how much low your traffic is. Just like, you have a bunch of friends that take roaming about more seriously than studying and you have your created study material, and you only have them to have a look at it. They will look but will never go into it.

New Blog Post

If any of your blog posts have become dead, that is, it had stopped collecting any new visit. You can bring it to life by posting an update. I do own a bog which is just two years old. So, I don’t get very high traffic. But every time a post a new post the traffic rises by 60 to 80%. In some cases traffic stats cross the limits. They are a few clicks more than twice the usual traffic stat.

Updating the old posts

Sometimes, it happens. You are in front of the screen and nothing to post. When this condition continues for more than 7 days, there is a noticeable drop in traffic stats. This generally never happened to me till now. But in recent past I was busy customizing my weblogs template. As a result I had no posts of my own though some guest posts were there which I ignored after notifying the respective authors.

My stats drop down rate was directly proportional to the passing dates. It took 3 days to complete the template task. And now I had a proper color scheme that was to be implemented in published bog posts. So I started updating my blog posts, just making heading changes like color and size, setting the text alignment to justified. I love to watch my stat and I observed 50% rise in traffic stat. Then I encountered one post that need some informative updates, I did that job too. This sequence of events proved clearly the importance of updates.
